These dogs can be obstinate, stubborn and strong willed. If you don’t have experience with training dogs, especially with training a Wheaten, it will be important to get in touch with your local Wheaten group and get some tips for how best to work with your dog.

These dogs are wonderful and lovable. They absolutely are one of the most wonderful breeds with children, other pets, and people in general. They are very social and love to play. They also enjoy chasing things so if you have a cat that will run, your new Wheaten puppy will be happy to chase it.

An important key to training your Wheaten will be learning how to read your dog’s body language and the timing of rewards and correction. The Wheaten loves being with people. They are very sensitive and do not respond well to harsh or angry words.

Consistency is also going to work very well when you are training your Wheaten. If you make the training fun and involve treats in your reward system, they will learn very quickly that going outside to do their business is a good thing. My Wheaten will only “go” if I stand out there with her, she doesn’t like to be outside alone. So, you’ll need to figure out what works for you and your dog and work from there. Basic obedience class can be helpful but must be designed for a Wheaten.

Wheatens will not do things unless they see a reason for it. So, most standard one-size-fits-all obedience classes do not work for them. There are classes for Wheatens that are designed to be fun and reward driven that you will have much more fun with. Patience is another important tip for training. Your Wheaten will never get tired of learning new things so you are not limited in what you can teach your dog to do.

There are many Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier training classes offered through groups and owners of Wheatens. The owners of Wheatens often find that they have the same unique personality traits as the breed and have great fun when they are spending time and learning things together. Wheatens are the type of dog that are very protective and look very brave, however, you need to remember that they have very soft hearts and you will be able to train them much easier if you remember that they will do more for love and treats than harsh words
