Australian Cattle Dog Breed Information

Australian Cattle Dogs are beautiful, intelligent, and fiercely loyal.  However, they can be a bit difficult to train.  In this article are a few tips that will aid you in understanding your new Australian Cattle Dog puppy.

Australian Cattle Dogs are one of the smartest dog breeds out there. They are bred for herding cattle which means they have to be pretty organized and intelligent to be successful at it.

The Australian Cattle Dog is considered a one or two-person dog and is suspicious of strangers. They can be very aggressive with other dogs partly because of dominance issues. Some of these dogs have their tails cropped, especially if they are to work with swine.

Australian Cattle Dogs have been successful in a range of dog sports, including weight pulling, flyball, and Schutzhund. The breed is particularly suited to activities that a dog can share with its owner. It is an effective hiking companion because of its natural endurance, general lack of interest in hunting, and preference for staying by its owner’s side. Most Australian Cattle Dogs love the water and are excellent swimmers.

It is not a hyperactive breed, and once one has had its exercise, it is happy to lie at its owner’s feet or rest in its bed or crate while keeping an ear and eye open for signs of pending activity. The Australian Cattle Dog is an adaptable dog that can accept city or indoor living conditions if its considerable exercise and companionship needs are met.

The Australian Cattle Dog is a working dog. Well, muscled and powerful. Its body length is a little more than its tail. The tail is held slightly low and is often at a curve. The skull is slightly curved between its ears and broad when alert. This breed has lovely pricked ears, which are wide-set.

They have a black nose. They have oval eyes. Their teeth should meet in a scissor bite. Their front legs are straight and strong, with small round toes. Their coat is smooth and is a double coat. The dogs’ undercoat is short. Colors are blue speckled, red speckled, blue, and blue mottled; this can come with or without markings. Black markings are not desirable within the show ring. Their puppies are born white due to their gene pool that has Dalmatian genes.
